Personal Reflection of
Material in Class
Following the meaning from Oxfords Dictionaries, stereotype
is “the widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular
type of person or thing”. It clearly said the idea of some culture but it
doesn´t means it is real.
The topic that I think affects me personally is when
we talked about the article “How to write about Africa”. It is a subject
present in every culture, but some times it becomes kind of aggressive to the
people you are stereotyping.
As a Mexican I felt identify with this because we are
a very stereotype culture. The problem is that people around the world star
thinking something specific about a population, but the real stamen it isn`t
that one, so when they come visit Mexico, they are expecting what they have
known from an idea, however they are not aware of reality.
Most of the time, the stereotypes about Mexican are
not good; we are related to bad situation, mafia and violence. Despite having these
problems, it doesn’t mean that we all are like that but that what we see in the
movies. For these reason, I consider the media in part responsible for stereotypes,
because people on the other side of the world are unable to know everything
about a country that far from them, and the media works as a resource of
information.
I consider that stereotypes are not good for anyone;
they just provoke some population to fell less or more comparing to other
cultures. However I found the beauty of the countries in the differences they
have between them, so I think that laughing about them is disrespectful.
